Green Schools News
 

Here in St Angela’s we are busy working on our 7th Green Flag.

So far we have celebrated receiving flags on the themes of

  1. Litter & Waste

  2. Energy

  3. Water

  4. Biodiversity

  5. Travel

  6. Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste

For the past 2 years our main focus has been on Energy Conservation and its impact on the wider world.

We developed an Action Plan for 2017/18 and 2018/19 as one of the 7 steps of the Green Schools Programme. You can see details of our plan here.

Our Green Code is central to our vision for Global Citizenship. This Code has been updated to include our great work with WEE Ireland.

The overall aim of the Global Citizenship: Energy theme is the chance to revise what we know, while looking at issues surrounding energy on a global scale. The committees over the past 2 years have been raising awareness on how looking after our environment aids people all over the world.

Seven Steps

We are engaging with the Seven Steps that set the targets for achieving our 7th Flag.

​

The overall aim of the Global Citizenship Litter & Waste theme is to create a knowledge and understanding about the link between environmental degradation and human rights. Students will learn about sustainable development and will be enabled to examine the world’s interdependency and development in a critical manner in order to create real change by acting locally and effecting a more equitable, just and sustainable world for all.

Global Citizenship
 

What is a Citizen?

Generally, a citizen is someone who is a member of a political community, group or state. Being a citizen brings rewards and responsibilities.

Most of us are citizens of Ireland. This means we get to vote, have our say and enjoy the good things about living here. However we must also obey the laws and pay taxes when we are older.

Being a citizen also means we must behave in a moral and socially acceptable way….. to make sure life is good for everyone.


Thinking Globally

We must try to think “globally.” This means thinking about the whole world. Things we do here in Ireland can have an effect in other places. Lots of our food comes from different parts of the world. Lots of people in our school come from different parts of the world.

We will try to “act locally, think globally.”
